A few years ago I was introduced to raw cow’s milk and I absolutely loved it. I had never been a milk drinker as a kid (unless it was of the chocolate variety) and I loved the taste of this stuff. I got away from it after moving and didn’t take the initiative to find it again.
Until now, 5 years later. This time, however, I found raw goat’s milk. I was a little hesitant that it would have “goaty” flavor. (To me that means more earthy tasting than cow’s milk.) I was surprised to find that is actually tasted very fresh and similar to cow’s milk.
In my state, and in most other, the sale of raw milk is illegal. The way that I am able to access it is through a herd share. This means that I buy a share of the goat herd and also pay a weekly boarding fee. This covers the the care of the goats and the the price of my weekly gallon of milk.
I choose to drink raw milk for several reasons. The main reason is that when drinking raw you get all of the enzymes found in the milk that are usually destroyed during the pasteurization process. This is why raw milk is sometimes more easily digested than pasteurized. I have also read that it can support the immune system, which is very important to me especially during this time. I also really enjoy supported local farmers/business. By going directly to a farmer you are cutting out the middle man.
